What God says:
Matthew 19:1-9
"1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these
sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of
Judaea beyond Jordan;
2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto
him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he
which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother,
and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore
God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing
of divorcement, and to put her away?
8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your
hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the
beginning it was not so.
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except
it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth
adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit
adultery."
Mark 10:2-12
2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.
5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
The bill of divorcement:
Deuteronomy 24:1-5
"1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it
come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath
found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of
divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his
house.
2 And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be
another man's wife.
3 And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of
divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of
his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his
wife;
4 Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again
to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is
abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to
sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
5 When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war,
neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be
free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath
taken."
1 Corinthians 7:10-11
"10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord,
Let not the wife depart from her husband:
11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be
reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his
wife."
According these Verses, you may divorce, but remain unmarried.
But let's study further:
Read First Corinthians chapter 7 (KJV) and study it.
Matthew 5:31-32
"31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife,
let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife,
saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit
adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced
committeth adultery."
1 Corinthians 7:12-16, 39
"12 But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother
hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with
him, let him not put her away.
13 And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if
he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the
unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your
children unclean; but now are they holy.
15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a
sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us
to peace.
16 For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy
husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy
wife?
39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth;
but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to
whom she will; only in the Lord."
Romans 7:2-3
"2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law
to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead,
she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another
man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be
dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress,
though she be married to another man."
Here is something according to what someone mentioned about their husband using her
as his servsnt:
1 Corinthians 7:23 - "Ye are bought with a price; be not ye
the servants of men."
"be not ye the servants of men."
He doesn't mean we not serve others (see 1 Cor. 9:19), Christ
served others, and we are to follow in his steps. We are not to
let people take avantage of us (boss us around), but be
Christ-like and shew forth the love of Christ to others.
Men are to treat women with respect.
See God's word:
Ephesians 5:20-21
"20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the
Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God."
21 "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of
God."
Verses 22-27:
"22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto
the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the
head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the
wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the
church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of
water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not
having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be
holy and without blemish."
The husband is being compared to Christ and the church. Does
Christ abuse his bride? No.
Verse 28: "So ought men to love their wives as their own
bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself."
Men ought to love their wives as Christ loves the church, and to
love them as thier own body. In Genesis 2:24, we see that Man and
Woman become one when they marry (also in Matthew).
(Read 1 Peter 3:1-6)
Now read 1 Peter 3:7-9
"7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to
knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker
vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that
your prayers be not hindered.
8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of
another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but
contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that
ye should inherit a blessing."
Husbands are to love their wives, not abuse them (whether it be
verbally or physically).
Verse 12: "For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous,
and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the
Lord is against them that do evil."
The LORD's ears are open unto your prayers. He will answer your
prayers (Psalm 37:4; Proverbs 10:24; Mark 11:24; John 16:24).
Let's Read Colossians 3:18
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is
fit in the Lord."
Women are to submitt themselves to their husband as with Christ,
they are not to be man's slave; Christ has set us free.
Verses 18-25:
"18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it
is fit in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well
pleasing unto the Lord.
21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be
discouraged.
22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the
flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of
heart, fearing God;
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not
unto men;
24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the
inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he
hath done: and there is no respect of persons."
Now see verse 19:
"Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against
them."
Husbands are to love their wives and be not bitter against them.
Husbands abusing their wives and having them in bonage to them
(making their wives slaves) is against God's command for
Husbands to love their wives, esp. to Love them as Christ loved
the church. Remember, Christ set us free (see Romans 6:22; 8:2; 1
Cor. 7:22; 1 Cor. 9:19).
In Galatians 4:22-23, Sarah (Abraham's wife) is refered to as a
freewoman.
"22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by
a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but
he of the freewoman was by promise."
WOW!
Summary: Divorce and Remarriage is sin; It also seems the woman's husband is (was) not shewing love
unto her and rendering unto her due benevolence (as the hushand
supposed to do)--benevolence means kindness--(see 1 Cor. 7:3). A woman (or man) should not take abuse.
